Ruimveldt Multilateral School as it was then called was opened on Monday September 15, 1975, along with a number of other Multilateral Schools around the country.
The Multilateral School program was designed to provide general high school education, with emphasis on practical applications. With a wide variety of studies offered, students would benefit from both educational and professional opportunities. Prior to entering the fourth form, students select an area of interest from the fields of Science, Technology, Agriculture, Home Economics, Arts or Commerce for a major study, but must show proficiency in the corresponding subjects to be selected.
North Ruimveldt Multilateral Secondary School as it is now known started at the levels of Forms 1-3, with the form 1 students securing their spots from the most recent Secondary School Entrance Examinations results. Forms 2-3 were transfers from East Ruimveldt Government Secondary School, aka back School.
The first Principal of the school was Mr. Shem Alli with Ms Vilma Lynch as his Deputy. There were several changes in the administrative leaders in the early years but with each change, guidance with a firm hand and successes were maintained. Along with the hard working teaching staff, there was a fully functioning prefect body that assisted with order and discipline amongst students.
Along with an academic program, that has produced Doctors, Lawyers, Diplomats and Economists, to mention a few, our school also had a very good reputation in the areas of Physical Education/Sports and the Arts. In the field of music the school has won many Guyfesta (Guyana Music Festival) competitions, and continues to excel, winning the Mashramani Steel Band Competition in the school band category for more than 20 years. The drama group was also very notable, especially with their performances in “Dollar for Dog” and “Wizard of Law” and has produced one of Guyana’s to dramatists, Andre Wiltshire. In the area of Physical Education/Sports there were numerous accomplishments in athletics, soccer, basketball, rounders, boxing, netball, chess and hockey to mention a few. Many of these students went on to represent Guyana at a national level in their respective disciplines and did exceptionally well.
Through the years, the school had lost its zest and academic achievements had fallen significantly. However, in recent years with the enthusiasm of the new Head Teacher, Ms. Diane Peters and the members of the teaching staff the school is returning to the glory days of academic achievement.
